What Doesn't Kill Us Makes Us Stronger, right?

I thought you all might enjoy this little poster (click on it to get a larger version). . .it's a "demotivator" from despair.com. If you haven't visited the site, you might find it fairly amuzing ;-)

Tonight we are going to do three things: discuss your NETS narratives (I will meet with each group to go over their NETS I narrative), learn how to add artifacts to your blog (emerging technology assignment), and discover Inspiration. I also want to demonstrate how to modify your excel template to get a cool version that we can host on our blogs.

I hope that you are feeling better about getting all of the work completed. Please don't hesitate to ask me if you have any questions or concerns about anything in the course. . .breathe. . .you will all be okay–I promise.

Journal 7: "Beyond Social Networking: Building Toward Learning Communities," by Ruth Reynard. This article comes from The Journal.

Today's Question:
Speaking of motivation. . . if you received a Pass/Fail grade instead of a letter grade in this course, would it affect the effort you put into class? Explain.

  1. I don't think receiving a pass/fail grade instead of a letter grade would have a big affect on my effort. I've always been really intrinsically motivated and I feel like the effort that I put forth and what I produce is a more true reflection of me than a grade is.

  2. If this class were pass/fail it would not affect my effort because I can't put my name on something without making sure it satisfied my expectations 100%.
This class means so much more than just a grade, this class means gaining knowledge and professional growth.

  3. Pass/Fail or ABC grading doesn't matter unless you know you have learned and participated to the fullest in a class. Although I can see that students may be not as motivated if they only have to do so much in other to receive a passing grade.

  4. It depends on a class. If it's a subject I'm interested in, then I'll probably try hard anyway. If it's something I don't really care about, and we're being graded on a Pass/Fail basis, then it's pretty unlikely that I'll put forth extra effort.

  5. I'm not gonna lie...I don't think I would do those journal entries if we didn't have to. BUT, I have really enjoyed the rest of the class and would have put forth the same effort in the rest of the areas (the NETS narratives aren't exciting either...just thought of that one).

  6. I think that if I got a pass/fail instead of a letter grade, then I would still try to do my best. I feel this way because the cut off for pass/fail could depend on the teacher, so just trying my best would settle my nerves...just incase I didn't pass. Plus these are great lessons that last longer than just this class

  7. No, it wouldn't. I have never taken a class for the grade. I go to school to learn regardless of the external reward system.

  8. I think pass/fail would effect the effort that I put into something because there is the though, "What's the point if there is no measuring stick then pass is pass regardless of the effort." Now the letter grade prospect makes me work hard since I am always worried about my grades. I am with bryan though; I really wouldn't do the journals if this class was pass/fail.

  9. For the most part I would say no, it would not affect how much effort I would put into the class. However, I'm sure if I had procrastinated on a particular assignment, it would probably cross my mind that I would only have to do just enough to get it done. I guess it would affect my effort slightly.

  10. Speaking honestly I probably would be as motivated or stressed. I would still be interested in what I learned. I would do enough to pass.

  11. I think I'd put the same amount of effort in because in this class, I want to learn each topic for my own personal use in the future so the content actually matters to me. Put me in a history class though and it would COMPLETELY affect my effort. I'd totally slack off.

  12. A pass/fail grading system, for me personally would not make a difference on the amount of effort I put into the classroom.

  13. I do not think the grading system would affect my effort because a lot of what we are learning I would like to use in the future, so I would put my best effort forth regardless.

  14. I am not gonna lie I wouldn't try as hard. For me I like getting the letter grade. There is satisfaction in knowing I got an A. I could put in effort and get a Pass or put in very little effort and get a pass. I like the letter grade.

  15. I want to say no, because I do like this course's material, but in all honesty, yes, it definitely would. Summer classes go way too fast anyway for me to even put in the effort I generally would put into a class. I like seeing that I have an A, so if it was just going to be a P whether I put in a 95% effort or a 75% effort, I wouldn't be trying very hard.

  16. I really enjoy learning new things. Getting ABC grade does not affect my desire to learn. No one force me to learn. I would like to do my best to get a good result. I believe this saying: "No Pain, No Gain."

  17. I would still put the effort into the class regardless of pass/fail or actual grades. But I still like the idea of getting a letter grade, just because I am used to it?...

  18. Ummm so I am going to go ahead and I am almost positive I would not put in as much effort! I would like to say that I would, but that would very likely be a big fat lie! The whole process of working towards an A and going above and beyond to get it is an entirely different process than doing just enough to get a Pass. If I did not have to put in the effort, I very likely would not put in the effort. Sad...but true!

  19. I am definitely driven by the need to get an A! Pass/No Pass wouldn't give me the motivation that I need to give it my all!

  20. Letter grades work better for me than Pass/Fail grades. I would most likely let some things slide if I knew it was going to be pass/fail. Striving for a A or B helps me get everything done.

  21. I definitely like the course content and want to learn as much as I can, but I feel like if it was a pass fail, what I would turn in to show what I have learned so far would not be as good as what I have turned in :)

  22. I always strive for an A, however, with this class, a pass/fail would not make me put in less effort. This class is important for me to start a second career after 25 years at my current job. Just getting by with a passing grade would most likely signify mediocre work on my part and I would be less prepared going into the credential program.

  23. I honestly don't know...I've never taken a pass/fail course. To be honest, I think I would probably slack off a little more than I already do, just because there wouldn't be a letter attached to my grade.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes of coarse it would. I would only do what was necessary to pass whereas if I took the class for a grade I would give my best in hopes to get an A.

  25. If the class content matters to me and I know that I would have future use for the information obtained in the class I would definitely put in the same amount of effort into class if it was a Pass/Fail grading system. If it's interesting I would want to learn the subject, but put me into a boring class required for graduating from college and I would probably slack off.

  26. Yeah, I think it totally would affect the amount of effort I would put in. In a pass/fail situation, I would do just enough to pass the class, versus in a graded situation, I would totally try my hardest because I would want to get the best grade I could.
