Will the Revolution Be Televised?

Are we seriously at the 1/2 way point of the course? It seems like only a week and a half ago when we started class. . .hey wait, it was only a week and a half ago ;-)

I know that you all have something you can be working on. . .finishing touches on the Newsletter, endless journal entries, powerpoint, understanding the NETS and TaskStream, familiarizing yourself with Google Docs, etc. . .so I will try and take it easy on you tonight. . .well, as easy as I can.

Tonight: we will collaboratively create our rubric to grade the PowerPoint assignments (next Monday), learn how to request feedback on TaskStream (you should all be enrolled by now), find out how to to the spreadsheet(excel) assignment, and discover Classroom 2.0, which will also be journal 4!

Journal 4: As I said, journal 4 will be both a journal entry and a separate assignment titled, "Classroom 2.0/web 2.0 Exploration. The Instructions are on webCT. . .please read them carefully.

This should be more than enough to keep you busy over the weekend. . .sorry ;-0

Tonight's Question: What has been the best book you have read in school and the best book your have read out of school?

  1. Old Friends is a book about a nursing home type facility that I chose to read for my Psyc 356 Adulthood and Aging class, it was really an eye opener for understanding and appreciating the older population. Out of school, my favorite books are the Harry Potter series, sorry, I don't think they're elementary or anything like that. I love them!!!

  2. The best book I have read in school was from a Civil War class two semesters ago: "Confederates in the Attic" which is a travelogue of a reporter's adventures through Civil War sites in the South. The best book out of school? I dunno, there are so many! "Harry Potter Series","Lord of the Rings Trilogy", "Lost Moon", "Song of Solomon", "Ender's Game", "Foundation Trilogy", "...and the list goes on.

  3. The best book I have read out of class would have to be Under the Tuscan Sun... I love the descriptive countryside and the yummy recipes! The best book I have read recently in class would have to be 'Why we Teach' by Sonia Nieto. I love the realistic stories of teachers and how they stumbled upon their careers.

  7. The best book I read in school was I guess To Kill A Mocking Bird, because it's really the only one I remember liking and actually reading. The best book I have read out of school is by far Atlas Shrugged. There's also a book called One Night Stands with American History that is really good, because it talks about nights/events that completely changed American History but are often over looked. (I'm a dork, I like that kind of stuff...)

  8. I'm not good at picking favorite books...I have a long list and they're not really ranked. I love "To Kill a Mockingbird", from middle school English. Outside of school, I've re-read "Rain of Gold" by Victor Villasenor a lot of times. It's amazing. Recently I read "Shadow of the Wind" and "The Angel's Game" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon and they're both the first books in a long time that I couldn't put down. I highly recommend them both.

  9. In school: probably a classic from high school...Siddhartha??? Honestly, there weren't a lot of books that I read that I really enjoyed (and I like to read).

Out of school: too many to choose from...I liked Three Cups of Tea a lot. I'm reading Lance Armstrong's autobiography of his cancer battle right now and it's really good. I'm also a HUGE Dan Brown fan.

  11. The best book I have ever read as mandatory reading in school would definitely have to be "Huckleberry Finn." Out of school, my favorite book is "The Hobbit" because it is the first fantasy book I had ever read and it got me into reading other great fantasy books like "Lord of the Rings Trilogy" and "Eragon."

  13. In school my favorite book I read was "Catcher in the Rye" by J. D. Salinger and my favorite book I read for fun would have to be "Salem's Lot" by Steven King..."Twilight" can't even come close to it in terms of being a good vampire story.

  14. For a racial communication class I read Bone to Pick of Forgiveness, Reconciliation, Reparation and Revenge by Ellis Cose.

I loved the book Memoirs of a Geisha. I seen the movie, but of course the book is much better because of the details.

  15. The best book that I have read in school was "The Tales of Shawman"...actually I can't remember the title, but I read it for a health and healers class in anthropology. The best book I read out side of class was actually a play called "The Pillow Man".

  16. I have read lots of books out of school, but the best one was Dezire. It was somehow historical.
Honestly, during my school years I haven't read any story book because the students just study their own textbooks when they are at school.

  17. My favorite book changes a lot depending on what I've read lately but I really loved "Three Cups of Tea" by Greg Mortensen. If you're interested in education (hopefully you all are...), social justice, or world issues (interesting perspective on war in Iraq), then you'll love it. Hmm books from school... Pride and Prejudice from high school. I also really liked most of my psychology, philosophy, and history texts.

  18. I'm going way back to elementary school, because I can't remember reading any books I liked in high school or junior high & the only book I remember reading in college was Catch 22 & I hated it. In the fourth grade we read Island of the Blue Dolphins & I loved it. And since I'm going back in time, my favorite book when I 13 or 14 was the Anne of Green Gables. Ahh... how sweet :)

  19. Hmm...favorite book in school, The Great Gatsby. Favorite book out of school is The Glass Castle, such an interesting book. It's a memoire about being raised in an untraditional, dysfunctional family. The author amazingly turns out to be normal despite her crazy upbringing.

  20. Best book I have read in a while was NISA! It was a book I had to read for an Anthropology class and I really enjoyed it. I do not have much time to read books, at least not books that aren't textbooks, with my school schedule. I keep pretty busy by taking way too many classes all the time. When I'm done with school I plan to get back into reading for fun.

  21. School was too far away and I can't even remember one book that I read, so I'll give two of my current favorites, they always change! "The Road" by Cormac Mccarthy--it is one of the bleakest book I ever read, but when it was done, it really stuck with me. Also, I really liked Hemmingway's "A Farewell to Arms", another book that ends somewhat badly. But so you don't think I only like heavy literature, I also love the Dark Tower Series by Stephen King--he can really spin a tale! OK that's three but I like to read!

  24. Crikey...I forgot to post an answer to this one...oops!

The best book I read in school was "To Kill a Mockingbird." It's so wonderfully written, and I love the message behind it. It continues to be one of my favorite books EVER.

It's much more difficult to choose the best book I read outside of school. I'm an avid reader, so there are a lot to choose from! I guess it's a toss up between "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," "The Secret Life of Bees," and "Heavier than Heaven." "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" is a classic, and since it's from the perspective of a young girl there are a lot of funny moments (even though a good portion of the book is fairly depressing). "The Secret Life of Bees" was great all around, and I passed it along to my sisters and grandma after I read it. Lastly, "Heavier than Heaven" is an awesome biography about Kurt Cobain, and I couldn't put it down!
